So viel ästhetische und gut funktionierende Architektur in so kurzer Zeit wie in den letzten 6 Monaten hatte ich zuvor noch nicht gesehen. Für meine San Francisco – Reise hatte ich von Anfang an gezielt einige Gebäude ausgesucht. Das wichtigste für mich war das Museum „California Academy of Sciences“. Neben anderen ökologischen Aspekten wurde das Gebäude aus Recycling-Beton und Recycling-Stahl gebaut. Desweiteren besitzt es ein Gründach mit einer Größe von etwa einem Hektar.

I had never seen so much aesthetically and well functioning architecture in such a short time before, like in the last 6 months. For my trip to San Francisco I had already picked out some nice buildings. The most important one was the Museum „California Academy of Sciences“. Among many other ecologically aspects, the building was made of recycling materials, like concrete, steel and insulation. Additionally, it has a green roof, which is nearly 1 hectare large.

Das „de Young Museum“ ebenfalls im Golden Gate Park ist ein Kunstmuseum direkt gegenüber der California Academy of Sciences. Die gegenüber stehenden Museumsgebäude mit einem Park in der Mitte erinnern mich an den Museumsviertel in Wien.

The „de Young Museum“ located in the Golden Gate Park too, is an art museum directly opposite of the California Academy of Sciences. This two museums with a park in the middle remembers me the museums district in Vienna.

Das jüdische Museum besteht aus zwei sich durchdringenden, mit blauem Metall verkleideten Körper. Diese dynamisch geformten Prismen durchdringen gleichzeitig einen Altbau. Es ähnelt dem -ebenfalls von Libeskind entworfenen- jüdischen Museum in Kopenhagen, wobei man hier in San Francisco von außen mehr zu sehen hat.

There are two dynamic prisms into each other at the Jewish Museum. They are covered by a blue metal skin and at the same time into an old building. It is smilar to the Jewish Museum in Copenhagen, also designed by Daniel Libeskind, but here in San Francisco there is more to see outside than in Copenhagen.

Morris Gift Shop ist eine Gallerie für Möbel. Hinter der fensterlosen Fassade verbirgt sich eine große Rampe die ins Obergeschoss führt. Der Architekt, Frank Lloyd Wright sah seinen Entwurf als einen Machbarkeitsnachweis für das Soloman R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Morris Gift Shop is a gallery for furniture. There is a circular ramp behind the windowless facade. It connects the ground floor with the upper floor. The architect, Frank Lloyd Wright designed the ramp as a proof of concept for the circular ramp in the Soloman R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Das Federal Building ist ein 18 geschossiges Bürogebäude. Das Gebäude wurde von dem Architekturbüro „Morphosis“ als umweltfreundliches Gebäude geplant und mit dem „Design Award“ von „The American Institute of Architects“ ausgezeichnet.

The Federal Building is a 18 storey office Building. It was designed by the architecture office „Morphosis“ as an environmental friendly building and got the „Design Award“ from „The American Institute of Architects“.

San Francisco is the fourth largest city after Los Angeles, San Diego and San José in California. The 800.000 inhabitants are from different ethnic groups. The most famous landmarks of San Francisco are the Island Alcatraz, the cable cars, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Transamerica Pyramid Building. Moreover, there are many galleries and museums for art and architecture lovers.

Alcatraz

Alcatraz liegt in der Bucht von San Francisco. Die Insel bekam den Namen Alcatraz von ihrem ersten spanischen Besucher im 16. Jahrhundert. Die zur Zeit unbewohnte Insel wurde zwischen 1934 und 1963 als Hochsicherheitsgefängnis genutzt. Heute gehört sie zu den beliebtesten Touristenattraktionen.

It is located in the San Francisco Bay. The island Alcatraz got its name from its first Spanish visitor in the 16. Century. The island was a high security prison from 1934 to 1963. Today, it is an uninhabited island but one of the most popular places by tourists.

Golden Gate Bridge

Sie ist eines der bekanntesten Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Die 6-spurige Hängebrücke hat eine Stützweite von 1280m und verbindet San Francisco und Marin County. Sie besteht aus Stahl und wurde nach 4 Jahre Bauzeit 1937 fertiggestellt.

It is one of the famous landmarks of San Francisco. It is a highway – suspension bridge with a total length of 2700m and its longest span is 1280m. The steel bridge connects San Francisco and Marin County. It was built 1937 after 4 years of construction period.

Transamerica Pyramid

Dieses Bürogebäude ist das höchste Gebäude in San Francisco und gleichzeitig ein weiteres Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Wie der Name es verrät, ist das Gebäude pyramidenförmig und 260m hoch. Es wurde 1972 -nach Plänen von dem Architekten William Pereira- fertiggestellt und eröffnet.

It is the tallest building in San Francisco and another landmark of this beautiful city. This skyscraper is 260m high and has the shape of a pyramid. It was designed by the architect William Pereira and was built and opened 1972.

Heute, nach meinem dritten Tag in San Francisco, verstehe ich einige meiner Freunde, die vor einigen Jahren bewusst nach San Francisco gekommen und hier geblieben sind, viel besser. Mit Temperaturen bis zu 20°C Tagsüber in dieser Jahreszeit ist San Francisco ein bedeutender Ort für den internationalen sowie nationalen Tourismus. Es hat verschiedenes für jede Altersgruppe zu bieten.

Today, after my third day in America, I can understand my friends which moved a few years ago to San Francisco much more better. With temperatures up to 20°C by day time, at this time of year is San Francisco an important destination for national and international tourism. There are a lot of activities for any kind of person in any age group.

My journey started on the 7. of February in the morning. I went to the airport in Nagoya, flew to Tokyo and changed to another machine. It is around 17:00 oclock in the meantime. After 9 hours of flight, I arrived at my destination on the 7. of February in the morning. It is wonderful, it is grandiose, it is San Francisco.

Es ist nicht leicht ein anderes Land, eine andere Kultur oder -noch einfacher- eine Stadt schiftlich zu beschreiben. Fotos ergänzen die Beschreibung und sagen oftmals mehr aus. Trotzdem gibt es Dinge die man weder schriftlich noch mit Bildern ausdrücken kann. Gerade hier in Japan wird man täglich mit Situationen und Wahrnehmungen konfrontiert die man in der Heimat nicht hat oder nicht kennt. Zum Beispiel Geräusche die man als Passant auf der Straße oder während der U-Bahn-Fahrt mitbekommt, Gerüche in den Tempeln, auf dem Fischmarkt oder auf Festivals, Geschmäcker der verschiedenen Speisen aber auch die architektonische Raumwahrnehmung, sind schwer zu beschreiben. Mit einer kleinen Auswahl von meinen Fotos möchte ich die Phantasie der Leser erregen.

It is not easy to describe a country or a culture or just a city in writing. Pictures often complete a description and sometimes they are more expressive than text. Nevertheless there some things which are not possible to describe in writing or with pictures. Especially, here in Japan there are a lot situations or visual, acoustic, taste perceptions in everyday life, which we dont have or know in our country. For example noises which we hear by walking on the street or by sitting in the subway, different odours in a temple, in the fish market or at festivals, tastes of different traditional foods, but also the perception of architectural and urban spaces are very difficultly to describe. I would like to attract the fantasy of the readers with a small selection of my own pictures.

Das Kaiserpalast bzw. die Palastanlage wird mit einer Doppelbrücke erschlossen. Der Palast ist in der Regel nicht zugänglich. Nur nach Neujahr am 2. Januar und am 23. Dezember, am Geburtstag des Kaisers, kann der Palast betreten werden.

The Tokyo Interial Palace accesible by a double arched bridge. Normally, it is not allowed to enter the palace area. But every year on the 2. January and on the 23. December (Birthday of the Emperor of Japan) its allowed to visit the palace.

Harajuku ist der beste Ort in Tokyo, wo man die Jugendszene beobachten kann. Zahlreiche Modegeschäfte locken die Jugendlichen hierher.

Harajuku is the best district, where you can meet fashionable young people in Tokyo. There are a lot of fashion stores side by side.

Der Sky Tree Tower ist ein noch im Bau befindlicher Fernsehturm in Tokyo. Nach Fertigstellung wird er mit 634 m Höhe das höchte freistehende Bauwerk in Japan und das Zweithöchste der Welt sein. Die Eröffnung ist im Mai.

The Tokyo Sky Tree Tower is a television tower in Tokyo, which is under construction. After its opening it will be the highest tower in Japan with a height of 634 m. The opening is in May.

Das Disneyland in Tokyo gehört, mit jährlich über 25 MIllionen Besuchern, zu den meist besuchten Orten in Tokyo. Das Freizeitkomplex wurde 1983 eröffnet.

Disneyland in Tokyo is one of the most famous places by tourists. There are yearly more than 25 milion visitors. It was opened 1983.

Maman ist eine Spinnen-Skulptur der 2010 verstorbenen Bildhauerin Louise Bourgeois. Die Skulptur wurde in Bronze gegossen und ist über 9 m hoch und 8165 kg schwer.

Maman is a spider sculpture designed by the sculptor Louise Bourgeois. She already died 2010. The sculpture Maman is made of bronze and is more than 9 m high and has a weight of 8165 kg.

Kobe is a modern port city in the west of Nagoya. It is also located in the Kansai area like Kyoto and Osaka. Large areas of Kobe were destroyed by bombing during the World War II and built up again. A huge earthquake with a 7,3 magnitude in 1995 in Kobe destroyed many buildings and streets once more. It was reconstructed within a few years. It killed more than 6000 people too. More than 40000 were injured. Except the famous harbour of Kobe there are many interesting places like several museums, an attractive „Chinatown“ and other places to see.

Winter came late this year. By day time, at 14:30 the thermometer shows -7°C in Braunschweig. It is followed by Istanbul with -3°C. These are the most coldest days at the Bosphorus since the last 33 years. With a temperature difference of 11°C compared to Germany, I am more than ok with 4°C in Nagoya. With temperatures around 30°C, compared to Germany, Japan and Turkey – Bangkok has high summer at the moment. I am sure it would be a great architecture excurcion to Bangkok these days. Das Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art wurde ebenfalls von Tadao Ando entworfen und 2002 fertiggestellt. Das Museum steht am Hafengebiet in Kobe. Die Ausstellung besteht aus japanischen sowie westlichen Kunststücken wie Gemälde, Skulpturen und Radierungen.
